The official net height is 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches) for men and 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches) for women, in both indoor and beach volleyball. Coed games commonly use the men's height. Youth leagues lower the net for younger players, so check your league's rules. Measure from the playing surface to the top of the net at the center of the court.
Net height changes the game more than almost any other setting, and it is easy to get wrong in a backyard.
Official heights
| Division | Height |
|---|---|
| Men | 2.43 m (7 ft 11 5/8 in) |
| Women | 2.24 m (7 ft 4 1/8 in) |
| Coed (common) | Men’s height |
| Youth | Lower; set by each league |
How to measure
Use a measuring tape or marked pole at center court. Both ends of the net, over the sidelines, must be at the same height and may not exceed the official height by more than 2 cm under FIVB rules.
Backyard tips
Most backyard systems adjust in steps. Set the height for the group playing, and use boundary lines so the court is the right size. See the backyard net system guide.
